  7. The Roadway Design System (RDS) is a comprehensive set of computer programs to
  8. assist the engineer in the design of highways. It can be used in all phases of
  9. road design and route location, as well as bridge geometry and layout. It is a
  10. large system, modularly written, and highly dependent upon several large data
  11. files interrelated to make up a large database. Because of the RDS database,
  12. the required data input is both simplified in nature and greatly reduced. This
  13. allows the engineer to perform a greater number of design trials, resulting in
  14. improved designs.
